During week one we were introduced to the design elements of point line and plane. To understand these principles of interaction design more we were instructed to create designs relating to specific words which were Multiply, disperse, Reflect, proximity, Scale and Dominance (point). for line, it was either between rhythm, frequency, symmetry or asymmetry. For planes, we could choose what to present them like but there had to be a meaning to them.

Multiply

“When something multiplies or when you multiply it, it increases greatly in number or amount.” - Collins Dictionary

During my research, I looked at the naturalistic golden ratio, which I liked the look of. for the first sequence of this, I decided to use the shape of the golden ratio which is determined by the Fibonacci code. when creating this design I designed the spiral to increase in levels as we went through the sequence ending up having 5 rows of dots. I also decided that the design was to simplistic so I made the dot weight increase in size through each box in the sequence.

When looking at the Fibbonacci code I thought I could use the code to decipher how many rows were in each of the designs which I think looks more naturalistic than the others. the first 2 boxes have one row and the next has 2, then the next has 3 and the next has 5 following the Fibbonacci code. Also, I changed the colour of the background to black and had white for the dots which I think makes the design stand out more than on the white ground.

I think this is a great representation of multiplication; the points multiply in size and amount throughout the 5 boxes. I have also been inspired by the work of Stefan Sagmeister in the seed project as this logo used a large amount of points to present something deeper. I liked how the points were all not situated in a line like the design of the golden ratio spiral.

Disperse

Disperse means to spread over an area of space. Some similar words for this are scatter, spread and diffuse.

to break up and scatter in all directions; spread about; distribute widely”- Collins Dictionary

After looking at Jacob Muller Brockman and what inspired his work I took a deeper look into some of his work he does not only have line and plane work he also uses point. these are the basic principles of design and they all need to be understood before creating a good design. I took a look at this piece in particular which explored the use of points. I liked how the points overlap and are in straight lines it was interesting to look at how the points were overlapping but during this project, the dots either had to be solid or outlined.

Also, I liked this other piece by Brockman for the use of different-sized points but I decided to make the points the same size as in the first one as it would work better to allow them to disperse more easily. After getting the layout of the sequence I experimented with the way the points were presented.

After research, I found that the most visually interesting way to present something dispersing is to have one box that is full of points then through each box, more points are taken away foreshadowing the points spreading out and dispersing.
