For the first project, we were tasked to choose a typeface for presentation in the form of a typeface specimen. we could choose from the list of modern typefaces which included Garamond, Bodoni, Caslon, Helvetica and Futura or we could choose a modern typeface which could have been Merriweather, Gotham, Proxima Nova, Abril Fatface and Shirk-land. after researching the different typefaces I decided to choose a modern typeface as after looking at example typeface specimens they all focused on the old typeface and less on the modern. I thought that Gotham was a good choice as it has been used in many brands including, Starbucks, Tom Ford and Spotify which I didn't notice before doing my research.
These are my initial designs which was focused on the history of the typeface exploring New York city. but these designs didn't focus on the typeface so i design some more this allowed me to combine ideas to get a detailed design.
These design focus on the typeface using different weights and letterforms of the typeface, some of these design focused on the history and the typeface.
These are the final designs i choose to move to Figma before i moved to Figma i made a more detail sketch of the design allowing me to visualise the design
For the typeface specimen I decided to explore the Gotham typeface which I explores in week 1. I decided to go for a more modern typeface as I could not find many example of these speciman during my research. After researching the background and history of the typeface I started planning out designs based on the background. I came up with different ideas including having the New York skyline and the statue of liberate feature in these designs. But after some feedback I decided to do is on the typeface rather than the background. I went back to the drawing board and created some more designs on paper them moved to Figma.
Firstly I explored using the letters that spell out Gotham repeating in the background with a circle in the middle showing background information paragraph and a main heading. When I completed this design I wasn’t sure in the design as it looked to cluttered and messy, meaning that it was harder to understand and look at the letterforms. To further this design I used a Lower opacity for the letters in the background allowing the foreground to become more of a statement.
