Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) was first invented between 1950 and 1956. When Alan Turing published his work entitled “Computer Machinery and Intelligence” in 1950, AI began its journey. This work eventually became The Turing Test which in 1952, computer scientist, Arthur Samuel used to develop the first-ever programme to learn a game independently.

Finally, in 1955, John McCarthy presented the idea of AI at a gathering for Dartmouth Summer Research projects. This served as the early foundational development of AI theory, and the term AI was attributed to him.

Progressing from the ’50s, the 1980s was a period of rapid growth for AI, known as the ‘AI Boom’. Governments began funding to support researchers and the programmes started to learn from mistakes and make independent decisions.

Present Day

In the present day, AI is now integrated into the mainstream world with tools such as virtual assistants, search engines and lots more. AI is very prominent in various sectors due to its ability to enhance efficiency and user experiences which businesses have used to their advantage for example, Amazon use AI for the management of inventory and Spotify have developed a tailored DJ using Artificial Intelligence

AI can be beneficial in UX design specifically as it means designers no longer have to manually sift through large amounts of research to interpret qualitative and quantitive trends and consumer behaviours, meaning they can focus more on the designing of their projects and they can use this information to create a service that is as useful to society as possible.

Threat or not

Although AI can seem threatening to many different industries, if used correctly, it can be of great benefit to UX designers and it will never truly replace the unique human qualities that UX designers can bring to the industry.

Virtual Reality

The first VR system that made strong headway into the public eye was designed to drive the Mars robot rovers from Earth  in real-time, invented by NASA Scientist, Antonio Medina, in 1991. VR is a ‘simulated three-dimensional (3D) environment that lets users explore and interact with virtual surroundings’ Kinza Yasar

VR is groundbreaking due to its ability to allow users to escape to a ‘new environment’ and within the gaming world, it has gained huge traction as it allows gamers to be fully emerged in the fictional world while also interacting with other users from across the globe, right from their home.

VR is very important to UX Designers as it allows them to explore a new area to tap into empathy, engagement and design concepts that effect users on a whole new level. If UX designers commit to designing for VR, it allows them to challenge their creative abilities and delve into a different structure of design that can revolutionise the way we use design and push it further than we ever have.

The best examples of effective use of VR in real life are the Meta Quest Oculus headset, primarily used for gaming and the relatively new development of Apple’s Vision Pro, a technology that will revolutionise the way we live.
