We were introduced to the course during the first week of the semester, we were briefed on what projects we are doing which I am excited to start. for the first project, we will have to create 4 screens for a music app, and for the second project, we are tasked to create a dashboard. we will create a style guide for these deliverables focused on illustrative interfaces and diagrammatic dashboards.
Firstly I visualised the shapes that made up the icons and it allowed me to visualise them for the rest of the icons. I drew simple shapes like circles, rectangles lines and triangles to create these icons.
To create these designs I used different lines and shapes it was hard to remove parts of the shape to get the icon to look accurate but after doing a couple of these icons I got the hang of creating these icons it was easier to visualise what I had to do.
Jon Hicks was originally trained as a wildlife illustrator but the market for this area was very small so he decided to take a job as a joiner designer at Coventry city council.
Jon hicks is an English designer, who is known for his redesign of the Firefox logo, miro, Mail chimp and Dyson. Jon hicks use a range of different disciplines such as print, screen design, branding, and iconography. he is mostly known for his iconography. The Firefox logo helped him create a name for himself. now he has produced the Spotify icon series. Jon keeps his work as simple as possible without it being boring.
When designing for Spotify he was able to create the genre icons which are seen on the browse page he went down the direction of having musical instruments for each genre. One of the challenges he faced was when something didn't have a physical form such as the audio player controls and for music he thought of using the Pink Floyd album cover it was a very well-known album allowing it to foreshadow the music, but they also tried metaphors like a setlist, a cassette, cd’s and vinyl for the playlist and for the profile the decided to use a backstage pass.
