Wilson Miner - When We Build
*Key points*
- objects can be a symbol of life (past, present and future self)
- these shape us and our environment
- new mediums can affect how we live such as cars and lightbulbs
- how we adjust to make these changes
- factories and roads
- objects are an extension of the human body (nervous system, feet, eyes and brain)
- we create tools such as bikes and computers to help develop what we already have and what we can do with the right tools
- which empowers our own human functions.
- human interactions with a screen
- network now wireless - invisible
- the computer is smaller - invisible
- screen which is what we interact with
- screen will be less important but what is presented on them will shape us
- we design for the environment we live in
- we all have to learn how to use the interface but it is becoming much faster showing how fast we can adapt to the change of the new environment
- but we can't just rely on what we know cause the environment is always changing so we will always have to learn instead of knowing the past allowing us to adapt to the change
- smallest changes can be transformative
- respond to design
- be observant
- learn to listen to the changing environment
- we design ecosystems to be able to survive (some die) but these respond to the changing environment
- we design for a world we want to live in
- all that's left is what we made such as space, noise and attention
- Overall the talk emphasises that as a designer, it's important to adapt and learn new tools to keep up with the ever-changing world. Sustainable design is crucial as what we design outlasts us and leaves a mark on the world. Our designs are extensions of the human body, helping us adapt and empowering our functions.
