In week 1, our focus was on the design elements of point, line and plane. We experimented with different sequences of points, lines and planes to better understand these concepts. By conducting research I understood why we use these elements in design. To help me think outside the box, I conducted non-specific research, allowing me to have different ideas and thoughts about our world.
For this task, we were instructed to create a grid of three-by-three squares. The first row included 2 of each of the elements, the second row included 3 of the elements and the third row included 5 of the elements.
To refine the final design, we started sketching on paper instead of starting immediately on Figma. allowing me to experiment with the layout. These designs were kept monotone which kept emphasis on the design instead of the colour.
I used different point sizes and experimented with layering them up and having them on white and black backgrounds to have contrast. I enjoyed learning you ti use Figma during the first workshop by the last three squares I got the hang of the positioning making the points actuate and using different sizes of the points.
For the line, I used different weights to create contrast between the different lines I also positioned them horizontally and vertically to create a variety and something visually interesting. I used thin and thick lines to play around with the idea of how a barcode is created but I used different orientations of the lines to create variety.
<aside> 💡 During week 1 we learnt the elements of design, those of point line and plane, this allowed me to explore how simple elects can form a well-structured design while thinking outside the box. The non-specific research allowed me to think of different Elmer’s of design in everyday life and opened my eyes to the design works around me such as clothing brands and film typography. During this week I learnt the basics of Figma allowing me to explore point, lines and planes and how they are the fundamentals that build design. I especially liked looking at how the seed media group used points to explore their brand identity with the use of point in a floral design.
