Postmodernism is one of the most controversial art movements which happened from 1970-1990. it divided the ideas about art and design. postmodernist design ranges from ludicrous to luxurious. The key principles of this movement were complexity and contradiction, these designs were very dystopian and futuristic, and these designers used salvaged and distressed material. The use of vivid colours and exaggeration was prominent. the post-punk subculture was presented through videos and graphics.

Wolfgang Weingart

Weingart is an internationally known figure in the graphic design and Swiss typography design community. during his time completing a two-year program at the Merz Acadamy, her learned the principles of typesetting, linocut and woodblock printing. I liked this work as it reminded me of Joseph Muller Brockmann’s work on the clear use of the grid systems, I also liked the use of the hierarchy of the text with the biggest text being the most important and the smaller text being less important allowing the user to see what the design is about without having to look into detail.

Jamie Reid

Jamie Reid’s most influential work was the record cover of the sex pistols’ single god save the Queen and has been deemed the most iconic image of the punk era. Jamie is a British artist and graphic designer. Jamie Reid was described as an iconoclast, punk, hippie, and anarchist. Jamie Reid has been influenced by politics and music. Jamie Reid’s’ style uses a collage of torn-up photocopies, screen prints, and bright colours to create a ransom note. An interesting feature that Reid sometimes includes is that he makes deliberate mistakes in his works. I liked his work as it has a historical meaning behind it but also the newspaper-like titles stand out to me. Many of Jamie’s pieces are being produced as posters, and t-shirts for campaigns like anti-capitalist, anti-war and for the environment

Review

<aside> 💡 This is my favourite design is have looked at throughout the timeline of lectures because of the bright colours use of typography and how this is a rebellious era in art. I like how these designs are all covered in design but they still look balanced. I also like the designs of Jamie Reid as they have a hidden message which I think is cool. I also like the use of the typography orientation of Paula Scher’s work and how it foreshadows New York. I like the exaggeration of colour and the use of complementary colours in Theo’s design and how it is linked to the punk era.
